Even though the start of the Richmond Raiders’ fourth season is five months away, the team continues to work hard to assemble a squad that can improve on 2012’s PIFL runner-up finish. Fifty-seven hopeful players looking to be part of the 2013 roster participated in Saturday’s open tryout at the Richmond Coliseum, and a number of them at all positions made an impression on Raider head coach James Fuller.

No. 2 James Madison rallied late in the game and fell short in the closing seconds, losing at Richmond, 35-29, in a Colonial Athletic Association battle, on Oct. 20. With the loss, the Dukes dropped to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Spiders improved to 5-3 and 3-2 in the league.

The Richmond Raiders have signed several players as they continue to add to the preseason roster. Seven returning players will provide experience and depth on both sides of the ball, and two newcomers will challenge for gameday spots in 2013.

Old Dominion improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday with a 45-37 victory over the Richmond Spiders at Robins Stadium. Seven different Monarchs got the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense into the scoring mix as Old Dominion led by as many as 28 points entering the fourth quarter. Although the Spiders managed to score 20 points in the span of 3:21 in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to eight, Old Dominion methodically wound down the clock over the game’s final six minutes and 40 seconds for the win.

The Richmond Raiders professional indoor football team will hold open tryouts for the 2013 season on Saturday, Oct. 20th at the Richmond Coliseum. Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. and ends promptly at 3 p.m. Players should be prepared to participate in a variety of drills including short shuttle, timed 40 yards for skill positions, timed 20 yards for offensive and defensive linemen, and one on one drills.

The Richmond Spiders opened the game by returning the opening kick for a touchdown, and went on to outgain the VMI Keydets 487-197 in total yards en route to a 47-6 victory Saturday in Lexington, Va.

The Richmond Raiders have taken the first step toward the 2013 professional indoor football season by signing three veteran players. The first three members of the 2013 Raiders are wide receiver Herb Jones, center Derek Stoudt, and defensive lineman James Carter.
