Terry McAuliffe officially launches statewide campaign

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe officially launched his campaign today in front of a crowd of about 200 in Norfolk. McAuliffe laid out his transportation plan and vision for how the next Governor of Virginia can help strengthen and diversify the Commonwealth’s economy. Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim introduced McAuliffe.

Manassas woman sentenced to 18 months for illegally buying and selling more than 31 handguns in 15 days

A Manassas woman was sentenced today to 18 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for illegally buying and selling more than 31 handguns in 15 days without a license. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli; U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Neil MacBride; and Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ (ATF) Washington Field Division Carl Vasilko made the announcement today after Kimberly Yvette Dinkins, 44, was sentenced by United States District Judge Claude M. Hilton.

U.S. Chamber report lists Virginia among top states for innovation

A report released this week by the United States Chamber of Commerce recognized Virginia among the top three states in the country for innovation and entrepreneurship. Virginia ranked sixth in the Chamber’s report last year. The report recognized Gov. Bob McDonnell’s “Year of the Entrepreneur” campaign in the report and the role of Virginia’s Business One Stop to help “entrepreneurs obtain the information and complete the steps required to register their businesses and find resources to help them grow and expand.”

Sen. Tim Kaine talks business in Waynesboro

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., was in Waynesboro on Thursday to meet with city leaders to discuss economic development in Waynesboro. Kaine met with City Councilman Tim Williams, City Manager Mike Hamp and Assistant City Manager Jim Shaw to discuss several ongoing development projects in the River City. Kaine then toured Downtown Waynesboro to learn more about the work on the Center for Coldwaters Restoration and to meet with several owntown business owners.

University of Virginia team wins Governor’s Business Plan Challenge

Timothy Higgins, Andrew Andreae and Jessica Ungerleider, representing the University of Virginia, won the Capital One Grand Prize today at the Governor’s Business Plan Challenge. In recognition of Virginia’s strong entrepreneurial environment, the statewide challenge, co-hosted by Work It, Richmond, featured the best business plans or concepts crafted by undergraduate students this year.

Tea Party, PAC tap Corey Stewart, Mark Obenshain in vetting for statewide nominations

A vetting of statewide candidates for the lieutenant governor and attorney general nominations fro the Republican Party in the 2013 elections conducted by the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation and Middle Resolution PAC led to the groups endorsing Corey Stewart for lieutenant governor and Mark Obenshain for attorney general.
