The Supreme Court had an historic week recently with major decisions on gay marriage, immigration and voting. I am particularly concerned about the decision that I believe does major damage to the Voting Rights Act.

This week, the House Judiciary Committee, led by U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, passed an immigration bill called the “SAFE Act” that would make the presence of immigrants in the U.S. without proper documentation a crime and give states and counties around the country the power to turn their police into immigration agents.

The ACLU of Virginia and more than a dozen other groups concerned about voting rights today sent a letter to Governor Bob McDonnell urging him to veto legislation that imposes stricter identification requirements at the polls, which the groups expect will limit eligible voters’ access on Election Day.

Great question from PBS political reporter Mark Shields to Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte today at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast. Shields asked Goodlatte, a power broker in the House GOP as the chair of the Judiciary Committee, whether the Republican Party’s recent electoral problems are “the pizza or the box,” that is, the product that the party is offering voters, or the packaging.

Congress needs to act on the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act, as soon as it reconvenes after the elections. The Act which was first introduced in 2001 would provide a path to citizenship for people brought to this country at a very young age.
