Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia made public a letter it sent earlier this month to Virginia’s sheriffs, local and regional jail authorities, and adult and juvenile corrections officials asking these officials to deny future requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to keep people in custody who otherwise are free to be released.

Over the last month, the flow of Central Americans attempting to enter the United States along the southern border has not stopped. Young children and teenagers, as well as their family members and other adults, continue to arrive on American soil in violation of the law.

Last week, the House took critical steps toward addressing the current immigration crisis at our southern border by passing key legislation that addresses the root causes of the crisis and stops the flow of illegal border crossings.

Congressman Robert Hurt (R-Virginia) released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 5230 and H.R. 5272, which address the current immigration crisis at our southern border:
