On Monday, 30 U.S. senators stood up for an “all-nighter” on climate change in Washington, D.C. We applaud Virginia’s Senator Tim Kaine for joining this effort. Sen. Kaine’s statement was a clear sign that he understands not only the urgency for Virginia in addressing the impacts of climate change, like rising seas in Hampton Roads, but also the opportunity for innovation.

Solar panels could become commonplace across the Commonwealth, if a bill patroned by Sen. Chap Petersen is signed into law. The House of Delegates voted to pass SB 222 today, sending the bill through its final legislative hoop before going to the governor for his signature. The House vote was 95-4.

Motorists have undoubtedly noticed gas prices beginning their seasonal uptick in recent weeks, jumping double-digits in many places since the beginning of February ($3.28 on Feb.1).

The term dirty fuels refers to fuels derived from tar sands, oil shale or liquid coal. Just like their more conventional fossil fuel counterparts such as petroleum and coal, they can be turned into gasoline, diesel and other energy sources that can generate extreme amounts of particulate pollution, carbon emissions and ecosystem destruction during their lifecycles from production to consumption.

A massive fire broke out at a Powhatan gas station last week in what officials believe may have been as a result of static electricity. Fortunately, the driver survived without injury and no one at the station was hurt.
