The SWAG Writers (Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta Group of the Virginia Writers Club) Reading Series continues with a reading by contributors to The Blue Ridge Anthology 2013.

On Thursday, June 27 at 7 p.m., Virginia Organizing will hold a forum on the history and current state of immigration in the Shenandoah Valley at the Staunton Public Library.

Called “one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world” by Matt Fink in The All Music Guide, Michael DeLalla will bring his delicious brew of solo guitar compositions and arrangements of traditional tunes gathered from around the world to WTA’s Gateway on Friday, June 28.

Audiences at WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, June 29, will listen to the winners from the last six Gateway Talent Nights and crown the winner in the grand finale. Hosted by Lorie Strother, the Dreaded Blues Lady, the performance will feature eight performers who were selected by Gateway audiences as the best performers in the monthly Talent Nights. The winner of the final round will receive a cash prize, a professional video and a paid gig at WTA’s Gateway in the Fall.

If you’ve noticed a lot of medium-distance flyball outs from Valley League hitters this year, and not nearly as many home runs as in previous years, well, you’re onto something. Hitting numbers are down across the league and across the spectrum, from the banner year for hitters that was 2012, which seems upon analysis to have been very much an outlier, but also even from more statistically consistent years in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

During two enrollment sessions in June, older adults with limited income will be eligible to receive $40 in coupons to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and cut herbs at the Staunton, Verona, and Waynesboro Farmer’s Markets this summer, thanks to the Farm Market Fresh for Seniors Program jointly sponsored by Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS), Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, and Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The Waynesboro Generals honored former player Woody Huffman, who played for the team in 1950-1951, before their game against the Woodstock River Bandits Thursday night. The Waynesboro Kiwanis Club and The McClung Companies donated $500 in Huffman’s name to the Buddy Ball program in Waynesboro.

The Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted its Economic Development Business At Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Staunton Conference Center on Wednesday.
