In anticipation of a new governor and upcoming General Assembly session, Virginians reported a mostly positive view of their personal financial situation and saw the status quo continuing for the state’s economy in the near future, according to a new Commonwealth Poll released today by VCU’s Center for Public Policy.

Bath County sheriff’s deputies responded to a non-emergency call for assistance to State Sen. Creigh Deeds’ home on Monday, the day before Deeds was stabbed in an altercation with his son, Gus Deeds, 24, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the attack.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the formal opening of a representative trade office in Canada focused on increasing agricultural and forestry product exports to the region. Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore attended the meeting on behalf of the governor.

A new report by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families found the number of uninsured children in the Commonwealth declined by about 14 percent between 2010 and 2012. The report attributes the good news to the success of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (known as FAMIS in Virginia).

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Virginia College Application Week (VCAW) at 32 Virginia high schools and proclaimed Nov. 18-22 College Application Week in the Commonwealth. This initiative is designed to provide graduating high school seniors with information and resources about the college admissions process.

The final Quinnipiac University poll of the 2013 election season has Democrat Terry McAuliffe with a six-point lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the Virginia governor race. McAuliffe gets 46 percent in the latest poll, with Cuccinelli at 40 percent and Libertarian Robert Sarvis at 8 percent.

Virginia Tech has named its $100 million arts center building in tribute to artist and philanthropist Patricia Buckley Moss, whose recent donation in support of the center is one of the largest gifts the university ever has received.

Not since the Scopes trial in Tennessee in 1925 has science been on trial as it has been in Virginia over the last few years. The Scopes trial was of course about Darwin’s theory of evolution. That trial concluded more than 85 years ago, but the debate goes on with fundamentalists who prefer the teaching of creationism over evolution in public schools.
