On Thursday at 7 p.m., Mary McPherson Highsmith will bring to life the story of her ancestral home and one of Waynesboro’s lost treasures, the Withrow House. Built in 1826, the Federal style home stood at 406 West Main for 129 years and was an important landmark in Downtown Waynesboro.

The area at the foot of the western slope of the Blue Ridge was ripe for development in 1889. First, mining speculator Richard N. Pool chartered the area as Ingalls City. He was quickly outmaneuvered by Jacob Resse a Pittsburg industrial who saw the area as the next steel capital. He bought up the land and the famous Lithia Spring and laid out the plan for Basic City. With great hopes and vision the newly incorporated town set out to create the future.

The 20th century was a time of unparalleled turmoil and opportunity for America’s Native population. Nowhere was that more true than here in Virginia. Larry Jent will trace that journey in his lecture Native Trials and Tribulations at WTA’s Gateway on Thursday, May 16 at 7 pm.

John Hardy, the acclaimed actor, playwright, director and former Artistic Associate at Virginia’s Barter Theatre, will return to WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, April 27 in his one-person drama Rattlesnake. Hardy plays sixteen roles in the drama with only a few pieces of furniture of props to highlight the action. It is a real tour de force for the accomplished actor. The 8 pm performance is at 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro.

Dr. Jim Armstead, noted professor of military strategy, will present “Strategic Analyses of Civil War” at WTA’s Gateway on March 21 at 7 p.m.

Members of the growing creative media community have several exceptional opportunities coming up, including a screenwriting workshop, a beginning audio workshop — both free — and a regional short film competition.
