I announced my first bid for elective office in 1973 while standing on the steps of the historic Fairfax County Courthouse. Only my immediate family and my secretary and her husband were there to hear me harken back to the Fairfax Resolves of 1774 when the citizens of Fairfax County enumerated their complaints against the Crown.

Abortion: What are we really doing when we restrict an already safe procedure?

Abortion is at its root a public health and safety issue. Strikingly, the numbers of abortions were fairly constant pre- and post- the Roe v. Wade decision, at roughly one million per year. The difference legality has made is in safety, for all women and especially for poor women of color.
