Last January, when our documentary film, We’re Not Broke, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, we were elated. The film’s message about how multinational corporations are cheating the American people out of desperately needed tax revenue to the tune of $100 billion a year was sure to reach the masses.

This past week during our first district work week of the 113th Congress, we had the opportunity to visit Danville and Blairs, and to make our first official visits in Warrenton. Many miles may separate Danville and Warrenton, but it is clear that those all across our district share a common concern with our nation’s unsustainable debt.

House Republicans have defeated a package of bills that would have established a streamlined process for restoring the voting rights of nonviolent felons. A package of bills that had the support of General Assembly Democrats and Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell was killed in a House of Delegates subcommittee Monday morning.

Gather at the Table, a book about two individuals exploring their vastly different histories – one being an African-American woman descended from slavery and the other a European-American man descended from slave owners and traders – is garnering national attention, with Barnes and Noble making it one of its monthly picks and radio and TV stations focusing on the topic.

Senior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) hit a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to boost James Madison (8-7, 1-1) to a 68-65 win over Northeastern (9-5, 2-1) in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.

The Virginia women’s basketball team earned a 78-59 victory over visiting NC State, breaking open a 51-51 tied game by outscoring the Wolfpack 27-8 in the final 10 minutes to improve to 11-5 on the season and 3-2 in the ACC.

The Prince William Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Virginians for High Speed Rail, Roanoke Chamber of Commerce and Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce have joined numerous other business and transportation groups in endorsing “Virginia’s Road to the Future”, the comprehensive, long-term transportation funding plan proposed by Gov. Bob McDonnell.

After a presidential election where tens of thousands of Virginia voters experienced long lines and several hour long delays at the polls, Democrats in the House of Delegates unveiled a wide array of election reforms at a morning press conference. The election reform package included instituting an Early Vote period, extending voting hours to 8 p.m., restoring voting rights, and a host of other measures to increase access to the ballot box.

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, representing nearly 2,000 companies that employ more than 280,000 individuals in 17 cities and counties in Southeast Virginia, has endorsed “Virginia’s Road to the Future”, the comprehensive, long-term transportation funding plan proposed by Gov. Bob McDonnell.
