After a multi-year battle that included intensive industry lobbying, multiple scientific and economic studies, and fierce opposition from a uniquely diverse coalition, a legislative effort to lift Virginia’s longstanding ban on uranium mining has failed.

For the past eight years – first as a blogger (at www.NoneSoBlind.org), and then as a candidate for Congress here in Virginia’s 6th District – I have fought to help my country confront the pathology that has arisen in our times in the American political system.

Stan Okoye scored VMI’s final 16 points, including 13 in the final 1:11, and converted the go-ahead put-back with 3.4 seconds remaining to lead the Keydets to a 70-69 come-from-behind win over the Radford Highlanders, in Big South basketball action Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va. With the comeback win, the Keydets regain a share of first place in the Big South’s North division.

A contract valued at $2.2 million was awarded to Fairfield-Echols LL.C of Fishersville for the construction of the Route 727 (Airport Road) bridge in Rockingham County. The contract was awarded by VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley on Jan. 25.

In a Tom DeLay, Texas-style move, Republicans in the Virginia State Senate redrew the legislative district lines without public notice or involvement. This action in the 20-20 divided body came on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday when Democratic Senator Henry Marsh, who is one of Virginia’s most prominent civil rights leaders, was away attending President Obama’s inauguration.

Even for those of us without allergies, poor indoor air quality is an often overlooked health issue. Recent research has shown that the air inside some buildings can be more polluted than the outdoor air in the most industrialized of cities. And since many of us spend some 90 percent of our time indoors, cleaning the air where we live and work might be one of the most important things we can do for our health.

We tend to see mental illness as something that happens out there, to stigmatized strangers on the fringe of our churches, when in fact mental health issues affect our families, friends, loved ones, congregants, and many of us personally. In short, mental illness is experienced by everyone in church communities – by “us” and our loved ones, not just by “them.”

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are joining bipartisan efforts to push immigration reform in a Congress that has been reluctant at best to move on the issue.

In their annual rankings released this week, the U.S. Green Building Council announced that Virginia has improved to the top state for LEED-certified buildings. Virginia ranked behind Colorado and Illinois last year, but improved to the top spot for 2012, with 170 projects certified, and 29,709,574 square feet of LEED space certified.
