#7 UVa. completes sweep of #5 Florida State

The seventh-ranked Virginia baseball team finished off a three-game series sweep of fifth-ranked Florida State with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd at Davenport Field. Virginia (35-6, 16-5) outscored the Seminoles 16-4 and did not trail in the series in recording the program’s first-ever three-game series sweep against FSU (31-9, 13-8).

Waynesboro Cultural Commission schedules romance writing workshops

As part of its mission to serve area writers, filmmakers, artists and performers, the Waynesboro Cultural Commission announces the second in its series of informal workshops. The romance writers’ workshops, scheduled for the first two Tuesdays in May, will introduce the genre and give aspiring authors the skills to understand the expectations of this popular fictional form.

AAA: Gas prices down 28 cents since mid-February peak

Motorists across the country continue to feel relief at the pump as gas prices in every state are lower than one week ago. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline dropped to $3.51 Friday. This price is five cents less expensive than one week ago, 19 cents less than one month ago and 38 cents less than one year ago.

Gov. Bob McDonnell: Major transportation projects moving forward

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on Thursday that the Commonwealth Transportation Board advanced over $150 million in long-sought transportation improvement projects at its meeting in Richmond yesterday. These projects are being funded as a result of the Governor’s 2011 Transportation Funding and Reform Package.

Jared King (R-Sr., Radford, Va.) hit a walk-off single to score Branden Cogswell (So., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the No. 7 Virginia baseball team to a 10-9 triumph over Old Dominion Wednesday night at Davenport Field. Down 7-2 in the sixth inning, Virginia (32-6) rallied to score its 14th come-from-behind win of the season.

VCU tops VMI in 11

The teams combined to leave 27 runners on base in a game that lasted three hours, 58 minutes, but in the end, a long single by VCU Ram Jordan Weymouth scored Joey Cujas to give VCU a 5-4 win over the VMI Keydets in non-conference baseball action Wednesday at The Diamond in Richmond, Va. The contest was the series finale between the clubs, as the squads split the season series at two games apiece.
