The Lynchburg Hillcats didn’t give up a hit until the eighth inning, when the Wilmington Blue Rocks used two hits to push a run across that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 final. James Hoyt did not allow a hit through six innings, facing just one over the minimum. It was his first start of the season and second of his career.

The romance writers’ workshops, scheduled for the first two Tuesdays in May, will introduce the genre and give aspiring authors the skills to understand the expectations of this popular fictional form.

Mark Pope gave up nine runs, and the Lynchburg Hillcats pitching staff allowed a season-high 20 hits in a 15-6 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash Wednesday night. It’s the highest single-game hit total allowed by a team in the Carolina League this season. Ross Heffley hit his first home run of the year for Lynchburg and drove in three runs to pace the Hillcats offense.

The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball was swept by Virginia Tech in a doubleheader Saturday at English Field in Blacksburg, falling 5-3 in the opener and 11-6 in the nightcap. UVa (38-8, 17-7 ACC) lost both games in an ACC doubleheader for the first time since April 6, 2008, at Florida State, and the Cavaliers lost just their second conference series of the season as the Hokies (27-18, 11-13) took two of three games.
