Supreme Court strikes down key provision of Voting Rights Act

A 5-4 ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court handed down today has struck down a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The court, split along ideological lines, ruled that Congress had used obsolete reasoning in requiring several Southern states to get federal approval for voting rules changes affecting blacks and other minorities.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels (35-34) stopped their franchise record seven-game losing streak with a walk-off, 3-2, win over the Binghamton Mets (43-27) in the first game of a doubleheader at The Diamond on Tuesday night. However, the B-Mets bounced back with an, 8-1, victory in the nightcap to split the evening.

Study: Senate immigration bill will reduce deficit, boost economy

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report on Tuesday, June 18 showing the bipartisan Senate immigration bill will decrease the federal deficit by $197 billion over the next 10 years. In addition, it is estimated that comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship would further decrease the federal deficit by another $700 billion by 2033.
