The Virginia Department of Transportation is providing motorists with extra services in the Shenandoah Valley and Charlottesville areas for the Thanksgiving holiday period. This past week, as our nation came together on Veterans Day to honor those who have served our country, I traveled across the Fifth District and talked with many of Virginia’s brave veterans. In addition to attending several Veterans Day events, I visited McGuire VA Medical Center, the Salem VA Medical Center, and three Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, more commonly known as CBOCs, in Danville, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville.

Seventeen miles into my first marathon, the 2015 Anthem Richmond Marathon, I was thinking about how I was going to finish. But the sprint for the last mile that I had been envisioning was ultimately out of the plans. Every step was an exercise in just trying to avoid a shutdown cramp.
