A lot of work from VDOT plow drivers and some help from mother nature is helping to clear many roadways in the Shenandoah Valley. As roads are plowed and temperatures rise, conditions are quickly improving.

Roads throughout the Shenandoah Valley are snow-covered shortly before mid-day Thursday. Snowfall totals range from 10 to 18 inches, and additional accumulation is expected this afternoon. Interstate and primary routes are passable, but most secondary roads have not yet been plowed.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises drivers to use caution when traveling Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, as temperatures may fall and cause icy patches. VDOT Staunton District crews and contractors have been monitoring road conditions and applying chemicals where needed.

VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

Indeed, private property makes up about 60 percent of the total land base across the United States. In 42 states there is more private land than public, and by a wide margin in most cases. (Only Alaska, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Arizona, Wyoming and California have more public land—that is, land owned by a federal, state, county or municipal government—than private.) Of course, all this private land isn’t just the parcels where our houses sit.

Motorists should be alert for lane closures September 16-18, 2013 on Route 616 (Dam Town Road) near Fort Defiance in Augusta County. The work zone will be between Route 777 (Knightly Lane) and Route 929 (River Bend Drive).
