Staff Report

Waynesboro High School alum Nick Gore scored 20 points and eight rebounds to lead six Keydets in double figures in VMI’s 111-92 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

Three records fell in Wednesday’s game, as the Keydets attempted 63 three-pointers on the night, setting a new school record which also stands as a Cameron Hall best. West Virginia Wesleyan also set a record, pulling down 72 rebounds on the night to set a new facility mark, while VMI nearly matched its previous best of 66 caroms in its home arena by grabbing 64 boards on the night, 38 on the offensive end.

With the win, VMI moves to 2-1 on the young season and attains a 2-0 start at Cameron Hall for the fourth consecutive year. West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 0-1 in their second visit to Lexington in three seasons.

VMI led 51-40 at the half despite shooting just 30 percent from the field and 17.6 percent (6-of-34) from three-point range.

“It was kind of a funky game,” coach Duggar Baucom said. “We had starters over there with two fouls in the first half. We had Ron Burks and Stan Okoye play a combined seven minutes in the first half. We had some guys who don’t play much have to come in and sustain and they played pretty well. We just shot the ball so poorly in the first half; 17 percent from three-point range. We didn’t shoot it very well for the game, but we shot it well enough to win.”
