Waynesboro tops Rockbridge, 8-6

Devin Smith didn’t have his best stuff Monday against Rockbridge, but Smith at 75 percent was still enough for the Generals.

“I did get in a couple of jams tonight, but I picked it up, and it turned out well,” said Smith, who picked up his fourth win of the season in the 8-6 Waynesboro victory.

Smith was uncharacteristically wild against the Rapids, walking two after coming in having surrendered just one free pass in 20 innings pitched in 2012. But his offense picked him up, cranking out four hits and working Rockbridge pitchers for seven walks, six by starting pitcher Jeremy Jansen (0-2).

Three walks and a hit batter propelled a four-run second inning for Waynesboro that got its exclamation point with a two-out, two-strike, bases-loaded single by Jacob Hoyle that made it 5-2 Generals.

The Generals continued a recent streak of going deep at home, getting a one-out homer from Austin Johnston in the seventh, his first of the season, to deep left-center. Johnston and Anthony Iacomini each had two hits on the night for Waynesboro, and Julian Ridings was 3-for-3 to raise his batting average for the season to a blistering .470.

Josh Bullock notched his third save of the season despite giving up a run on two hits in the ninth.

The win improves Waynesboro to 14-6 on the season and gives the Generals a half-game lead in the South Division over idle Harrisonburg.

The Generals conclude a two-game mini-homestand Tuesday night when Front Royal comes to town.
