A 4o-year-old Waynesboro woman was injured after allegedly setting her house on fire Wednesday night.

Monica Smith was removed from the 4th Street home for medical treatment; she was not taken into custody. It is unknown if the treatment was for her mental health or for injuries due to the fire.

However, the Waynesboro Police Department now has two active felony warrants for Smith for the following offenses:

  • 18.2-83 – Make and communicate a threat to bomb, burn, destroy, discharge a firearm within or at, or damage a place of assembly, building, or other structure, or means of transportation.
  • 18.2-77 – Maliciously burn or by the use of an explosive device or substance destroy or cause to be burned or destroyed an occupied dwelling house or manufactured home.

According to the WPD, officers responded to a welfare check at 11:30 p.m. after Smith reportedly made threats to set her residence on fire.

When officers arrived at 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, they observed an active fire within the residence.

No further information was released. It is unknown if Smith owned, rented or occupied the residence.
