A new city attorney should be on board soon, as early as next week, while Waynesboro City Council appears to be taking a wait-and-see approach to its open city-manager position.

Sources tell The Augusta Free Press that a new city attorney has already been hired and could be introduced at Monday’s meeting of Waynesboro City Council. The city has been without someone in the position since the resignation in April of former city attorney Bob Lunger.

The city has contracted with the Staunton law firm of Wharton Aldhizer & Weaver to provide legal advice to city council in the interim.

Long-time assistant city manager Mike Hamp has been serving as the interim city manager and head of city government since the resignation of former city manager Doug Walker became effective June 30. There is no word on what city council might have in mind as far as either making Hamp’s ascent to the leadership role permanent or beginning some kind of search process aimed at finding a new city manager.
