Waynesboro Generals top New Market Rebels, 2-1

generals-new logo2Tyler Howe held New Market to two hits in seven scoreless innings, and the Waynesboro Generals bullpen pitched out of a jam in the eighth in a 2-1 win Saturday night at Rebels Park.

Howe (1-0) struck out six and walked one. The Rebels finally got on the board in the eighth, loading the bases with a two-out single by Nate Blanchard and walks to Zach Callahan and Kevin Woodall. Storm Edwards worked another walk to plate Blanchard, but reliever Alex Mauricio struck out Thatcher Coleman to end the threat.

Mauricio finished out the ninth to earn his first save of the season, pitching around a two-out walk to Lorenzo Wright before getting P.J. DeMeo to ground out to third to end it.

Rebels starter Brian Murphy (1-1) limited Waynesboro to one hit in six innings, but it was a pair of unearned runs in the third that did him in. Michael Brosseau reached on a one-out error, Imani Willis and Clayton Taylor walked, and Joseph Estrada played Brosseau with a fielders choice, and then Willis scored on the back end of a double steal.

The Generals host South Division rival Harrisonburg Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Linco Park at Kate Collins Field.
