The Waynesboro Exchange Club presented its Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award to Sgt. David Shaw of the Waynesboro Police Department at a ceremony on Jan. 18.
Sgt. Shaw has been with the department for 14 years and serves as a shift commander for one of the four patrol shifts. In addition, he is the manager of the department’s Field Training Program and the Body Worn Camera Program.
Over the course of his career, he has been awarded numerous commendations and awards including the Life Saving Medal and departmental Officer of the Year Award for 2011. Last fall, Sgt. Shaw was named the first recipient of the CIT Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award by the Blue Ridge Crisis Intervention Team and Mental Health America of Augusta for his actions de-escalating and defusing a situation involving an armed and suicidal individual.
“Sgt. Shaw epitimizes the selfless service and dedication that Waynesboro Officers commit to their community everyday and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve with him,” said Waynesboro Police Chief Mike Wilhelm.
The Waynesboro Exchange Club, which gives this award annually, is an all-volunteer, national service organization for men and women who want to serve their community, develop leadership skills and enjoy new friendships. Over the years, a diverse array of Exchange Club sponsored programs and projects have made a considerable impact on America and enhanced the lives of countless men, women and children.
The club has one major national project which is the “prevention of child abuse” but it also serves many needs in our local community. In addition to service awards for police officers and firefighters, the group sponsors scholarships, and a Christmas party for needy children, among many others.
