A pedestrian was struck by a tractor trailer early Sunday morning on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County.

The person, who was in the northbound travel lane of I-81 when hit, had been in a crash before exiting his vehicle.

Harry L. Martin, 45, of Washington, D.C., suffered life-threatening injuries. He was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment.

The three-vehicle crash happened at 3:02 a.m. at the 292 mile marker on interstate.

Martin’s vehicle, a 2014 Honda CRV, was traveling north when it ran off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran of the right side of the roadway and collided with a guardrail, according to Virginia State Police.

After striking the guardrail, the vehicle came to rest on the right shoulder, according to VSP, at which time the driver, Martin, exited the vehicle and ran into the northbound travel lanes.

A northbound tractor trailer was unable to avoid a collision and struck Martin.

The impact of the crash caused a second northbound tractor trailer to collide with the other tractor trailer as both were attempting to avoid a collision.

Neither tractor trailer driver was injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
