Virginia Tech AD on Frank Beamer’s future: We’ll cross that bridge

Chris Graham

virginia tech frank beamerYou’d think that Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer would be in a position to craft his own exit plan, but seems you’re wrong to think that.

Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock told Daily Press writer David Teel Friday that “nothing has been determined” on Beamer’s future at Tech.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. Whenever that day comes, we’ll do what we feel like is best for Virginia Tech,” said Babcock, who took over as AD at Tech in January 2014.

Beamer’s teams have gone 231-115-2 in 28 seasons at Virginia Tech, but his last three teams have struggled, going 7-6 in 2012, 8-5 in 2013 and 7-6 in 2014.

The Hokies were tabbed by ACC beat writers and broadcasters to finish second in the seven-team Coastal Division behind rival Georgia Tech, so there are higher expectations for 2015.

But to read Babcock’s comments to Teel on Beamer’s future, it seems that the athletics director is already thinking into the future.

“Shoot, do I think about it? Of course, and we’ll have a plan. But I also have faith that things will work out the way they’re supposed to be,” Babcock said. “But what I want to do for him is support him in every way possible, honor his career and what can we do to finish, whenever that may be, on the right note.”
