Video: UVA basketball opens Spain tour with two wins over Madrid Generals

The UVA men’s basketball team posted a 2-0 record against the Madrid Generals during its first leg of its tour of Spain.

Virginia opened the tour with a 91-82 win over the Generals on Wednesday (Aug. 10) and added a 78-76 win on Thursday (Aug. 11). Both games were played at the Pabellón Felipe Reyes.

Austin Nichols and Kyle Guy led the Cavaliers with 17 points each in the 91-82 win. Marial Shayok added 12 points and London Perrantes and Darius Thompson chipped in nine points each.

The Cavaliers trailed 21-18 after the first quarter, but Guy drilled a pair of 3-pointers en route to a 10-point second quarter as UVA gained a 40-37 halftime advantage.

Madrid hit seven 3-pointers in the third quarter to take a 68-67 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers outscored the Generals 25-13 in the final stanza. Thompson tallied five steals, Perrantes dished out five assists and Isaiah Wilkins added six rebounds. The Cavaliers shot 54.1 percent from the field, including 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point range. UVA also forced 22 turnovers.

Ty Jerome, Jay Huff and Mamadi Diakite did not play in the contest as head coach Tony Bennett shortened the rotation. Edu Duran led the four Generals in double figures with 19 points.

In game two on Thursday, Ty Jerome drained a 3-pointer with 12.3 seconds remaining to give the Cavaliers a 78-76 win.

Virginia started the game on an 8-0 run behind four points from Mamadi Diakite and buckets from De’Andre Hunter and Nichols.

Madrid rallied for a 40-37 halftime advantage, outscoring the Cavaliers 20-11 in the second quarter.

Hunter tallied five points and Diakite and Nichols added four points apiece as UVA narrowed the Madrid lead to 55-54 after three quarters.

UVA trailed 73-72 before Jerome (10 points) closed the Cavalier scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers to seal the victory. The Cavaliers were 6 for 6 from the line in the fourth quarter and 14 for 16 for the game.

Nichols and Shayok tallied 14 points each for UVA and Hunter added 12 points. Diakite contributed nine points as UVA rested Perrantes, Wilkins and Jack Salt during the contest. Max Sole led the Generals with 13 points and Ivan Cruz added 12 points.
