VDOT working around the clock to clean up roads after storms

Chris Graham

Virginia Department of Transportation crews have been working overnight and today clearing downed trees and debris from roads in the wake of last night’s storm. Currently, 250 roads are affected statewide; the majority are secondary routes and some primaries. All interstates are clear.

Due to widespread power outages, many traffic signals are out, particularly in Northern Virginia. VDOT crews are coordinating with utility workers to remove downed trees from roads. In some cases, trees are entangled in power lines and utility crews need to remove the lines before the trees can be removed.

“Our crews will be working around the clock to clear the roads so power can be restored as quickly as possible,” said Commissioner Greg Whirley.

According to weather forecasts, the commonwealth can expect another round of severe storms this afternoon and evening. Motorists should be alert to rapidly-changing weather conditions and use caution while driving during severe weather.
