The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

INTERSTATE 64

Work zone between the West Virginia line at Sweet Springs and Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) and then continuing on Route 311 north to Route 601 (Tuckahoe Road), then continuing on Route 601 to the West Virginia Line. Route 60 (East Nelson Street, City of Lexington) – Bridge over Varner Lane is closed. East Nelson Street traffic from Washington Street to Randolph Street will be rerouted onto Washington Street for the duration of the bridge reconstruction. Watch for detour signs. Location is 1.2 miles east of Route 628 (Beldor Road) and 0.08 mile from the dead end at Route 626 (Sandy Bottom Broad). No through traffic during closure. All work weather permitting.
Route 662 (Greenville School Road) east of 1205 intersection – Single lane closure for patching on Main Street for 1.0 mile. July 27, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Road construction from Route 690 (Summit Church Road) to the Rockingham County line. Flagger control Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion July 31, 2013.
Route 701 (Howardsville Road) between Route 11 (Lee Highway) and Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) – Right shoulder closures with possible single lane closures for installation of right turn lane for C. Layman Subdivision. Monday – Friday, 8.a.m. to 5.p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 31, 2013.
Route 748 (Flint Hill Road) – Road construction west of Mount Sidney, from Route 626 (Seawright Springs Road) to Route 696 (Sidney Gap Road). Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Estimated completion July 31, 2013, weather permitting.

Route 617 (Church Street, Town of Timberville) – Utility upgrades with intermittent lane closures controlled by flaggers between Route 42 and Route 1521 (East Riverside Drive). Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion end of summer.
Route 672 (Pineville Road) – Road closed to through traffic from McGaheysville Road to Lawyer Road (1.275 miles) for road demolition and reconstruction. One lane will remain open for property owners and residents only. No through traffic. Expect delays. Work this week will run Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion September 2013.
Route 726 (Stone Spring Road/Peach Grove Avenue) – New road construction to extend Southeast Connector. Possible shoulder closures controlled by signs, from 0.512 miles east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.149 miles west of city limits. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion November 2014.
Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge work from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice. Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.
Route 730 (NEW) (Community Center Road) – Alternate lane closures from Route 731 (Community Center Road) to Route 257 – Paving operations. Flagger controlled traffic. Estimated completion July 29, 2013.

Route 340 – New traffic pattern as part of the bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway. Traffic has been routed onto new section of roadway, 0.1 mile south of Route 663 (Island Ford Road) to 0.16 mile south of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road). Expect daily lane closures and 24-hour shoulder closures. Estimated completion for bridge work is fall 2013.

Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to Route 686. Signs will be posted.
