VDOT: Be careful on roads as winter makes one last pass

Chris Graham

vdot logoSpring may be just around the corner, but VDOT reminds motorists to watch out for possible icy areas on roadways as precipitation and low temperatures are expected this weekend.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be monitoring weather conditions and have crews out to treat roads as needed.

Rain and snow are expected to begin this evening in the western part of Virginia and will move across the commonwealth through Sunday. Most areas will not see heavy accumulation, but moisture and freezing temps could cause icy patches.

Anti-icing materials will be applied where effective. These operations will not take place on roadways where rain may occur before snowfall. Rain washes away the treatment, making it ineffective.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time to reach destinations, lower speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
