University of Virginia senior Monica Wright has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Wright, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, scored 30 points for the 19th-ranked Cavaliers and tied a career-high with nine steals in the squad’s 74-43 win over Furman on Dec. 8. The guard from Woodbridge, Va., added seven assists and eight rebounds vs. the Paladins. Wright finished 10-for-16 from the field with two 3-pointers and was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. It was Wright’s third 30-point game of the season.

With 1,990 career points, Wright is chasing Virginia’s all-time scoring record, which was set by Dawn Staley at 2,135 points in 1992. In addition, Wright is currently third in the league in scoring with a 20.4 points per game average, second in steals (3.6 spg) and sixth in rebounding (7.6 rpg).

The weekly honor marks the fourth player of the week accolade for Wright, while it is the first of the 2009-10 season. She was also tabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week seven times her freshman season.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Dec. 20 at Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
