UVa. women fall at #8 Maryland, 68-61

The Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road at eighth-ranked Maryland, 68-61, Monday (Jan. 16) at Comcast Center. Junior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) was one of four UVa scorers in double figures, scoring 15 points.

Virginia’s record went to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Maryland remained unbeaten at home and improved to 17-1 overall (4-1 ACC).

Gerson finished 6-for-15 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers. She added four steals and three assists for Virginia.

Sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) scored 14points and had four steals. Senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added 12 points while senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) netted 10 points.

Virginia led by eight, 26-18, after a jumper by Telia McCall at the 7:48 mark of the first half. From there the Terrapins out-scored theCavaliers, 18-6, and held a 36-32 advantage at halftime. It marked the third-consecutive contest that Virginia trailed at the halftime break.

In the second half, Virginia closed the gap at the 17:38 mark on a lay-up by Shine that tied the score at 38-38. Maryland’s Tianna Hawkins scored to put Maryland up 40-38 on the next possession and the Terrapins never trailed again.

Down the stretch, Virginia cut the lead to five points with less than two minutes to play but did not get closer.
