Virginia women’s tennis standout Julia Elbaba made a triumphant return to her home state of New York this week at a US Open National Playoff Sectional Qualifying event.
Elbaba posted a sparkling 5-0 mark, defeating Elina Arakelyan (6-0, 6-0), Brianna Turano (6-0, 6-0), Magda Okruashvili (6-3, 6-1), Joanna Zalewski (6-2, 6-0) and Malika Rose (6-0, 6-1) en route to the championship.
Elbaba advances to the US Open National Playoff Championship in New Haven, Conn., beginning Aug. 21. Incoming recruit Sophie Chang (Havre de Grace, Md.) will also compete at the event after winning the US Open National Playoff Sectional Qualifying event in Kansas in May.
The winner of the US Open National Playoff Championship will earn wild card entry for the US Open in September.
