UVA Tennis: Julia Elbaba advances to finals at US Open National Playoffs

Elbaba_Julia_14MAfter dropping the first set, Virginia senior Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) rallied to defeat Ashley Weinhold 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. With the win, Elbaba advances to Monday’s final.

Elbaba will face Jennifer Elie in the final on Monday.

The run to the finals has been an exciting one for Elbaba who defeated top-seeded Ayaka Okuno in the first round (6-1, 6-2). She then rallied from three games down in the opening set to defeat Alexis Nelson in the second round (6-3, 6-0).

The winner of the US Open National Playoffs – Women’s Singles Championship advances to the US Open qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 25-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King tennis center, with a chance to earn a spot in the main draw at the 2015 US Open.
