Good news, fingers crossed, on Antonio Clary – UVA Football coach Tony Elliott thinks the sixth-year safety should be available on Saturday for North Carolina.
“He practiced today, so we’re very hopeful he’ll be back this week,” Elliott told reporters at his weekly presser on Tuesday.
Clary has missed Virginia’s past two games, both losses – 24-20 to Louisville on Oct. 12, 48-31 at Clemson on Oct. 19 – with a knee injury sustained in the fourth quarter of the 24-14 win over Boston College on Oct. 5.
Clary is second on the UVA Football team in tackles, with 48, with an INT, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups on his 293 snaps on defense in 2024.
Other notables
- Linebacker James Jackson (43 tackles, five TFLs, two sacks, 385 snaps in six games) is “still nursing his foot, and he’ll be a game-time, week-to-week situation there,” Elliott said.
- Defensive lineman Michael Diatta (182 snaps in six games) and cornerback Kempton Shine (373 snaps in seven games) both practiced on Tuesday and are expected to be available.
- Cornerback Dre Walker (44 snaps over three games in 2024) practiced on Tuesday, and Elliott used the word “hopeful” on Walker’s status for Saturday.
- Right guard Ty Furnish (293 snaps in six games) sustained an ankle injury in the Clemson game, and Elliott said he doesn’t anticipate that Furnish will be available on Saturday.
- Wideout Kameron Courtney (nine catches/11 targets, 90 yards, 150 snaps in five games) was back in practice on Tuesday, but is “probably a little bit further away than maybe Clary and Dre Walker.”
- Wideout Trell Harris (13 catches/18 targets, 201 yards, two TDs, 133 snaps in three games) had knee surgery this past week, “so he’ll be about three more weeks before we get him back,” Elliott said.
- Tailback Jack Griese (15 rushing attempts, 55 yards, one catch/one target, for a 57-yard TD, 50 snaps in four games) is still out.
