The UVA Football program picked up a late transfer from the portal, from the new national champion, Ohio State – edge rusher Mitchell Melton, a 6’4”, 261-pound former four-star prep recruit.

And, yes, that was quick – Melton was on the field for eight snaps in the Buckeyes’ 34-23 win over Notre Dame on Monday night.

Melton will compete as a grad student in 2025. He only got on the field for 213 snaps in two seasons, 2023 and 2024, after redshirting in 2020, then missing the 2021 and 2022 seasons with injuries.

In his limited time, Melton had three sacks and 16 total QB pressures for the Ohio State defense.

The D line room for 2025

Transfer portal pick-ups

  • DE Fisher Camac (2024 at UNLV): 572 snaps, 34 QB pressures, eight sacks, 75.6 PFF grade.
  • DE Cazeem More (2024 at Elon): 540 snaps, 38 QB pressures, six sacks, 76.7 PFF grade.
  • DT Jacob Holmes (2024 at Fresno State): 416 snaps, 28 QB pressures, four sacks, 70.4 PFF grade.
  • DT Hunter Osborne (Alabama): a 6’4”, 298-pound redshirt freshman, who was a Top 300 player nationally in the Class of 2023, but barely got on the field at ‘Bama in two seasons there (19 total snaps).

The top returners on the D line include

  • DT Jahmeer Carter (581 snaps, 12 QB pressures, one sack, 63.0 PFF grade)
  • DT Anthony Britton (446 snaps, 10 QB pressures, two sacks, 56.7 PFF grade)
  • DE Terrell Jones (282 snaps, nine QB pressures, 57.3 PFF grade)
  • DT Jason Hammond (141 snaps, two QB pressures, one sack, 59.3 PFF grade)

That’s nine guys on the D line with good college experience.

Quick math there: five interior guys, four edge guys.

Might be able to call it a day with this latest addition.
