ACC Player of the Week snubs
The media panel snubbed UVA Football again this week in the voting for ACC Football Players of the Week.
The most obvious snub was Malachi Fields, who had 11 catches on 13 targets for 148 yards in Virginia’s 31-30 win at Wake Forest on Saturday night.
The media panel went with Pitt wideout Konata Mumpfield, who had five catches on eight targets for 123 yards and two TDs in the Panthers’ 28-27 win over Cincinnati.
I mean, yeah, two TDs, but Fields was not only more productive, the extra attention that he got from the Wake D opened things up for his teammates – Trell Harris had seven catches on 11 targets for 91 yards and a TD, and tight end Tyler Neville had four catches on four targets for 67 yards and two TDs.
Fields didn’t just put up his own big numbers, he helped his teammates get big numbers as well.
I could make a case for Chico Bennett to be the Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Bennett had two sacks and four total QB pressures in the win at Wake.
The media panel went with Miami’s Tyler Baron, who had three sacks in the Hurricanes’ blowout win over Florida A&M.
My case for Bennett: his big game came in one that mattered.
Personal preference in both cases, I know.
Stupid hotseat odds
I got emails today from BetVirginia.com and Bookies.com listing the odds that UVA coach Tony Elliott and Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry will be fired this year.
As if.
BetVirginia.com gives a 9.1 percent chance (+1000) that Pry will go down this year.
Not happening.
Bookies.com puts the chance that Elliott gets fired at 6.3 percent (+1500).
Not happening.
If anybody is getting fired this season, to me, it’s FSU’s Mike Norvell, and BetVirginia.com has him at 6.3 percent (+1500), and Bookies.com has him at 4.8 percent (+2000).
FSU has a helluva lot more at stake, with that lawsuit going and all, than either UVA or Tech do with their coaches still in the rebuild phase.
Schedule note
The ACC announced today that the UVA-Coastal Carolina game down in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, Sept. 21, will kick off at 2 p.m., and that the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
I don’t know that I remember any 2 p.m. kickoffs anytime recently, or ever.
