The story of UVA Baseball in 2025 is: preseason #2 to now just one game above .500.
Six Liberty pitchers held Virginia to seven hits on a staff day on the way to a 5-3 win over the punchless Cavaliers on Tuesday in Lynchburg.
Wow, is all I can come up with.
A week ago, UVA coach Brian O’Connor called out his team after a listless 6-2 loss to Richmond, and the result was a three-game series sweep at the hands of Duke at The Dish.
The disinterest continued on Tuesday. Liberty (17-8) took control in the middle innings, with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh.
Jacob Ference hit a two-run homer for UVA (12-11) in the second, and Chris Arroyo doubled home Eric Becker in the ninth.
Henry Ford and Aiden Teel each came to bat in the ninth as the tying run at the plate, but both were retired on outfield lineouts to end it.
Joe Colucci (1-2, 9.28 ERA) took the loss because he gave up the tie-breaking run out of the pen in the fourth.
I can’t imagine where O’Connor goes at this stage, after giving the fire-and-brimstone speech ahead of a three-game beatdown and a road loss.
