uva baseballThe UVA baseball team lost to Old Dominion, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Va. The game was played in front of 6,029 fans, the largest crowd to ever watch a college baseball game in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“We couldn’t get a big hit and that was unfortunate, but that’s a credit to Old Dominion,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “They ran some good pitching out there tonight, and all of them have thrown on the weekend for them. We saw some good arms and just couldn’t capitalize enough. Adam Haseley did a nice job starting for us. Everybody we brought in to pitch did a really nice job and kept us in the game.”

Virginia starting pitcher Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits and two walks. He took the loss and dropped to 1-1 on the year. Old Dominion reliever Joey Benitez (1-1) worked three innings to earn the win, while Nick Hartman tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his first save. ODU starter Greg Tomchick pitched four innings, giving up just a run and two hits.

Virginia was limited to five hits. Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) homered for the Cavaliers (27-18). ODU (21-23) finished with eight hits.

ODU took advantage of a two-out Virginia throwing error in the first inning, scoring when second baseman Jack Gerstenmaier (Fr., Richmond, Va.) errantly threw to first base on a Taylor Ostrich grounder, with Zach Rutherford coming around from second to score.

UVa tied the game in the fourth inning when Smith homered into the ODU bullpen in right-center field for his fifth home run of the season.

ODU promptly responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth as Connor Myers led off with a double and Mike Perez followed by singling him home. The Monarchs padded their lead in the fifth inning on a two-out single by Eldridge to bring home P.J. Higgins.

Following a nine-day break for final exams, Virginia returns to action May 8-10 with a three-game ACC series against Duke.
