A wind-aided wildfire in Pendleton County, W.Va., about 20 miles from the West Virginia-Virginia border, has grown to approximately 200 acres, according to the USDA Forest Service.

The Woodside Fire was detected on Wednesday south of Circleville, near the community of Big Mountain, and was initially estimated at 50 acres.

According to the Forest Service, the fire is burning on steep, mountainous terrain.

Ground crews and a helicopter with water dropping capabilities are on site actively working to suppress the wildfire.

Safety of firefighters and the public are the top priorities.

Smoke may be visible in Circleville, Big Mountain, Thornwood and surrounding communities. Motorists are asked to be mindful as smoke can shift and may affect visibility while driving.

Vance Run Trail, near the Laurel Fork River, is closed for the public’s health and safety. The public is asked to stay out of the fire area for safety of themselves and firefighting resources.

Also for the safety of firefighting resources, no drones are allowed near the fire area.

Dry and windy conditions continue to create elevated fire danger across the area. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor burning and to practice responsible fire safety at all times.
