Update on Greene County hit-and-run fatality: Victim ID’d

policecar3Virginia State Police continues to pursue leads and tips from the public concerning Tuesday’s fatal hit-and-run in Greene County.

The crash  took place in the northbound lanes of Route 29, approximately 2/10 of a mile north of Route 607…just outside Ruckersville. Damien S. Shifflett, 30, of Stanardsville, Va., was walking south in the northbound lanes of Route 29 when he was struck and killed by a northbound vehicle. The vehicle that struck him then fled the scene. Shifflett died at the scene.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office received its first call concerning a body in the roadway at approximately 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The Virginia State Police is still asking for anyone who might recall seeing a white, male pedestrian wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans in the area of the Route 29 truck stop near Ruckersville between the hours of 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to please call the Virginia State Police at 434-352-7128 or #77 on a cell phone. Investigators are also asking anyone who might have witnessed the hit-and-run or knows of a passenger car with new damage to its front end to please call state police as well.
