Art
Senior art show on Friday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m., in EMU’s Margaret Martin Gehman Art Gallery. Photography Major Sarah Gingrich and Photography and Digital Media Majors Michelle Mitchell and Meredith Wilson, all seniors, will each offer a gallery talk about her work with a reception to follow. Auditions:
The Shenandoah Valley Youth Orchestra is holding auditions Thursday evenings, September 18 and 25 at 7:15 (or by appointment) at EMU. Talented and serious high school students (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, french horn,trombone, percussion and string players) are encouraged to apply to perform with this high-level ensemble. Music
Musikgarten at EMU is now registering students for fall classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten through second grade. Classes are offered at various times throughout the week. Register now for the ten-week session that begins the week of September 22. Deadline is Sept. 12. Music lessons are available through EMU’s Preparatory Music Program for students of all levels, ages 3 and up. Lessons are offered for violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, flute and piano with Suzuki options for most instruments. Register now for the fall semester beginning August 25! The Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir will partner with Jose Luis Orozco, a bilingual children’s author, composer and recording artist at the 17th annual International Festival in Hillandale Park. SVCC singers will join Orozco in singing two pieces around 1:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Contact the children’s choir at 540-432-4650.

Music Faculty Artist Series: Terra Voce, on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m., in EMU’s Martin Chapel in the Seminary building. Terra Voce is known for lively and creative programs combining the diverse and the unexpected. Cellist Andrew Gabbert and flutist Elizabeth Brightbill thrill audiences with their virtuosity, engaging, conversational style of presentation, and their genre-expanding programs that explore a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and cross-cultural influence. Contrary to what most would expect from a flute and cello, their arrangements test the limits of what is possible on just two instruments. Admission is free. Suter Science Seminar with Christine Hughey, PhD, on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 106. Dr. Hughey will present on: Electrospray Ionization Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (ESI LC/MS): Foodomics & Fundamentals. Positive and negative ion electrospray selectively ionizes nonvolatile basic and acidic compounds, respectively, for mass spectrometric detection. Hughey’s undergraduate research group uses this technique in targeted and untargeted profiling of food samples (a.k.a., food metabolomics). They also study the effect of analyte physiochemical properties and solution conditions (solvent, pH) on electrospray response. A better understanding of electrospray ionization fundamentals facilitates method development for our foodomic applications, which includes the profiling of nuts, fruits, chocolate and beer. Writers Read at EMU with Evie Shockley on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m., in EMU’s Lehman Auditorium. Shockley published four collections of poetry: The Gorgon Goddess and a half-red sea were published by Carolina Wren Press in 2001 and 2006; 31 words * prose poems appeared in 2007 (Belladonna Books). Her most recent collection the new black (Wesleyan University Press, 2011) received the 2012 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Poetry. Shockley received the 2012 Holmes National Poetry Prize. Small Concert Series: Port Harbour, on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 p.m., in EMU’s Common Grounds Coffeehouse. Port Harbour is an independent, self produced band from Virginia. Our music comes out in a style that is a combination of the six of us put together, and we call it lyrical rock, or melodic indie rock. Admission is free and open to the public. Suter Science Seminar with David Mercier, author, on Friday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 106. Mercier is the author of A Beautiful Medicine—A Radical Look at the Essence of Health and Healing, a Grand Prize winner in the 2013 Nautilus Book Awards. Small Concert Series: The Stray Birds, on Friday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m., in EMU’s Common Grounds Coffeehouse. The Stray Birds have crafted an original sound that draws upon the richness of American folk music traditions. Talented multi-instrumentalists who perform with captivating musicality, the signature power of their sound lies in outstanding songwriting that soars in three-part harmony.
