united way of greater augustaUnited Way of Greater Augusta wants to invite the community to participate in #GivingTuesday on Nov. 27. Created to follow immediately after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #Giving Tuesday is a global event that kicks off the charitable season. It is meant to inspire people to collaborate and improve their local communities and those wanting to do so are encouraged to visit www.unitedwayga.org/give .

This #GivingTuesday, United Way of Greater Augusta wants to highlight the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the growing need for funding in the Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County area. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library was started in 1995 by Dolly herself and is meant to encourage reading and to promote early childhood literacy in preschool children. The program sends a child a specially selected book each month through age 5. United Way of Greater Augusta partnered with the Imagination Library in 2009 and since then, more than 2,600 local kids have received free monthly books.

It does not cost the families anything to sign up for the program and to receive the monthly books, but it costs the United Way $30 a year per child. Currently over 400 children in the Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County area are receiving monthly books, and there is a waiting list of over 75 local children. The goal for #GivingTuesday is to eliminate the waiting list. United Way of Greater Augusta is inviting the community to sponsor a child for $30 on November 27th.

Those interested in sponsoring a child can do so through the website at www.unitedwayga.org/give, or by texting GIVE to 540-307-1880 and then following the instructions. This year, Facebook is matching donations made via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/UnitedWayofGreaterAugusta starting at 8:00 am on Tuesday, November 27th.

To find out more information on the Imagination Library or to sign up a child, please visit www.unitedwayga.org/imagination-library or contact Kristi Williams at 540-885-1229 or by email at [email protected].
