The United Way of Greater Augusta is working to build them one.

United Way of Greater Augusta applied for and received a $20,000 MLK Day of service grant on behalf of Community Child Care that will cover most of the cost of materials and equipment. Volunteers will to do most of the work preparing the yard and setting up the area that will house the new equipment. They will spend several days over the next couple of weeks in honor of the MLK holiday to turn this vision into a reality.

“We are so grateful that the legacy of Dr. King will be honored by creating a space that a diverse population of wonderful children can use to be active, learn, and grow.” said Paul Vaughan, Community Investment and Relations Manager of the United Way of Greater Augusta. “We are working very carefully to make sure that this will be a high quality playground that will be around for a very long time.”

The United Way of Greater Augusta and Community Child Care held a ceremony and a visioning session on Monday, January 18th to celebrate the grant and share Dr. King’s legacy with the children.

Beth Orebaugh, Center Director, said afterward, “The kids and teachers are so excited to have a playground that is age appropriate and safe that will spark their imagination and creativity, all while encouraging them to get outdoors and be healthy.”

Over the next several weeks, volunteers will begin preparing the yard on the side of the building by removing old play structures, preparing the ground, and removing old mulch in preparation for the play equipment to be delivered.

In addition, volunteers will construct raised garden boxes behind the building so that children and staff can grow vegetables on site while learning the benefits of health eating.
