Earlier this week, HB1980, introduced by Delegate Tim Hugo (R-40), was unanimously passed out of the House Education Subcommittee on Higher Education. The bill, if enacted, would require four-year public colleges and universities to post relevant financial and academic information on their websites to help parents and students make better, more informed decisions.
On the unanimous passage of HB1980, Delegate Hugo stated:
“This bill will help take some of the guesswork out of choosing from Virginia’s many highly regarded colleges and universities. As student debt continues to climb, it is important that we provide both parents and students this vital and necessary information to better plan for their future educational pursuits. With this information easy to access, students and parents will be able to decide what best fits their needs financially and academically.”
The data that HB1980 would require institutions of higher learning to make available would include the following areas: six-year undergraduate graduation rate for the last 10 years, freshman-sophomore retention rate for the last 10 years, annual percentage increase in tuition and mandatory student fees, as well as links to their annual report and budget.
