Two Virginia baseball players selected Satuday in MLB Draft

uva logoVirginia senior infielder Reed Gragnani (Richmond, Va.) and redshirt senior Scott Silverstein (Olney, Md.) each were selected Saturday in the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Gragnani was a 21st-round selection (663rd overall) of the Boston Red Sox, while Silverstein was a 25th-round pick (745th overall) of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The pair join teammate Kyle Crockett (Poquoson, Va.), who was was selected Friday by the Cleveland Indians Friday in the fourth round (111th overall).

Gragnani is batting .305 this year in 60 games. A First-Team All-ACC selection, he owns 65 hits and also has driven in 49 runs. He also was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team this season.

Silverstein is 10-1 with a 2.86 ERA this season. In 88 innings, he has struck out 69 and walked 25 while limiting his opponents to a .261 batting average. The senior southpaw has battled back from a pair of shoulder surgeries in recording a standout season.

Virginia continues NCAA Super Regional play at 7 p.m. Sunday when it entertains Mississippi State at Davenport Field. ESPNU will carry the game. The Bulldogs hold a 1-0 edge in the series.
