Two people are dead, including a 5-year-old girl, after a vehicle hydroplaned in heavy rain this morning on Route 501 in Campbell County.

The vehicle allegedly crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a tractor trailer head on.

The driver, Madilyn Ballard, 26, of Altavista, along with a 5-year-old female passenger, both died at the scene.

Virginia State Police is investigating the fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred at 8:27 a.m. on the 10900 block of Brookneal Highway.

The 2020 Kia Forte was traveling southbound before the accident.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
