Tim Kaine on Afghanistan political, security transitions

AFP

kaine new2U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern, South and Central Asian Affairs, released the following statement today on Afghanistan’s political and security transitions:

“I congratulate both Dr. Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on this historic moment in Afghanistan’s political transition. Despite the challenges in recent months, both leaders have displayed incredible statesmanship and resolve and I encourage them to swiftly appoint a new cabinet.  As the national government takes shape in the weeks ahead, I hope the spirit of unity and partnership will continue to prevail.  Only through consensus and compromise can this new government meet the aspirations of the Afghan people.

“I also welcome the signing of the U.S.-Afghan Bilateral Security Agreement. This agreement is vital to preserving the extraordinary gains Afghans, Americans and coalition forces have made over the last 13 years.   Afghans must be responsible for their own security, but they have in the United States a steadfast and reliable partner. Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for all Afghans.”
