uva boise stateUVA quarterback Matt Johns threw an interception that Boise State defensive tackle Justin Taimatua returned for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

It got worse from there.

Johns was intercepted three times, two of them returned for touchdowns, and was called for intentional grounding in the end zone. The Cavs committed five turnovers in all, and Boise State, a four-point favorite coming in, embarrassed Virginia, 56-14, Friday night in Scott Stadium.

The Broncos (3-1) led 17-0 before the ‘Hoos could get a first down. It was 29-7 late in the second quarter before Johns connected with Taquan Mizzell on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 3:09 left in the first half to get UVA into hailing distance, down 29-14 at the break.

Any sense that this one would be a contest in the second half evaporated quickly. A Tyler Rausa field goal pushed the lead to 32-14, and then after a Mizzell fumble, Brett Rypien connected with Thomas Sperbeck on a 30-yard TD pass to make it 39-14 with 8:01 left in the third.

Johns was lifted after his second pick-six, a Mercy Maston 25-yard interception return for a TD that made it 46-14 with 3:00 left in the third.

Johns finished 12-for-25 passing for 199 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and a 117.3 passer rating.
