Republicans Milt Peterson and Jan Schar endorsed Terry McAuliffe for Governor of Virginia on Tuesday, the second announcement this week that major Republicans in Virginia are backing McAuliffe instead of GOP candidate Ken Cuccinelli.
Jan Schar, the former President of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women, stated that she is supporting McAuliffe because “he will focus on issues critical to Virginia’s economic future and will work in a bipartisan way to support compromise.” Schar added that “Virginia does not desire candidates” who are “unable to leave their ideology and political views at the front door of their elected office,” referencing the GOP ticket of Ken Cuccinelli, E.W. Jackson, and Mark Obenshain.
Milt Peterson, a leading Virginia businessman, who is the Principal and Chairman of the Peterson Companies and has been a major supporter of Virginia Republicans for over 15 years, announced his support for McAuliffe because he “is committed to making sure that Virginia’s economy stays strong, to improving the state’s infrastructure as well as sufficiently funding education to maintain Virginia’s high standards.”
McAuliffe campaign spokesperson Josh Schwerin said “this influx of support from leading Republicans across Virginia further cements the call for a governor who will focus on bipartisan ways to grow Virginia’s economy and create jobs here in the Commonwealth. We continue to see mainstream Republicans abandoning the Cuccinelli-Jackson-Obenshain ticket because of their career-long focus on imposing their own divisive social agendas on Virginians. Terry, on the other hand, has shown that he will work with members of both parties and focus on issues Virginians care about, like the economy, transportation, and education.”
On Monday, McAuliffe received endorsements from Dwight Schar, former Republican National Committee Finance Chair and Earle Williams, former candidate for the GOP nomination for Governor in 1993, both of whom were supporters of Republican Governor Bob McDonnell’s campaign for governor in 2009. McAuliffe has also been endorsed by Vince Callahan, the longest-serving former Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates, as well as Katherine Waddell and Jim Dillard, also Republicans and former members of the Virginia House of Delegates.
Statement from Jan Schar:
“As a Virginia Republican, and former President of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women, I am supporting Terry McAuliffe. Virginians want candidates who talk about creating a better future for the Commonwealth – this includes creating jobs, providing good education for our children so we have an educated workforce to attract the best companies here, and solving all the other problems currently facing Virginia, such as transportation, healthcare, and taxes. Virginia citizens, including Republicans, want candidates who will provide responsible fiscal management of our state government.
“Virginia does not desire candidates who are so completely disconnected from the average Virginian that they are unable to leave their ideology and political views at the front door of their elected office.”
Statement from Milt Peterson:
“The Commonwealth’s prosperity depends on the maintenance of Virginia’s positive business and educational environments. This year I am endorsing Terry McAuliffe for Governor of Virginia. As a successful business man, Terry knows the challenges business owners face in starting and growing their companies. He is committed to making sure that Virginia’s economy stays strong, to improving the state’s infrastructure and to sufficiently funding education to maintain Virginia’s high standards. As a Republican, I am confident that Terry McAuliffe will be committed to working with both parties in seeking solutions to challenges our communities face and will put in place policies that will diversify and grow our economy, create jobs and enhance education in Virginia. That is why I am supporting Terry for Governor.”
UVA Football, if you believe Deion Sanders, struck out on undersized Colorado safety Carter Stoutmire, but, good news, on Friday, the ‘Hoos picked up a commitment from 6’4” Cincinnati cornerback Jordan Robinson.
