Tech takes ACC

vatech_thumbnail.jpgA 24-yard touchdown pass from Sean Glennon to Eddie Royal broke a 16-16 tie, and an interception return by Xavier Adibi sealed the deal for Virginia Tech as the Hokies defeated Boston College 30-16 to take the ACC championship.

Glennon threw three touchdown passes for Virginia Tech (11-2) – which had been a play or two away from beating BC (10-3) when the two teams met in Blacksburg on Oct. 25 in what turned out to be a 14-10 Eagles win.

Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan rallied his team late in that one, but he could not conjure up more of the same magic today – the Eagles were held scoreless for the last 32:49 after bolting to a 16-7 second-quarter lead.

The win likely puts Virginia Tech into the Orange Bowl – though there is a slim chance the Hokies could end up in the BCS national-championship game should both top-ranked Missouri and second-ranked West Virginia lose tonight.

The win by Tech also makes it likely that Virginia (9-3) will earn an invitation to the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1 to play Big 12 opponent Texas Tech.
