Tech loses top flanker in drill

Bad news for Virginia Tech football fans – the already-depleted wide-receiver corps is going to be down its top flanker in 2008.

Redshirt junior wideout Brandon Dillard is out for the season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon in player-organized passing drills on Tuesday. The walkon had worked his way up to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart at flanker this past spring, which saw him score on a 25-yard touchdown catch and also post a 4.28 clocking in the 40-yard dash.

Dillard will have surgery at Montgomery Regional Hospital next week and then begin an expected four- to six-month period of rehabilitation.

The Martinsville native has already redshirted, but he could apply for a medical-redshirt waiver.

“I’m just going to try and turn this negative into a positive,” Dillard said. “I’ll use this as an opportunity to teach the young guys and even though I won’t be playing this year, I’ll still be cheering on my teammates. I’m going to get this surgery done, start rehabbing and slowly start trying to work my way back.”
